Display flashing when my PB2400 is powered by the battery.

5/4/98: a reader, Mr. Nagasawa.

The display of my PB2400 flashed when the power is supplied from the battery. When it occurred, the machine did not go dimming but it was keeping brightness of the display. It would start after about 5 minutes of starting up. Because of getting worse, I took my PB2400 to NCR quick-garage (one of the most famous repair service provider in Japan) in Umeda, Osaka. The staff started the repairing immediately because the problem was also reproduced in front of them. But, I needed to go there three times to complete the fixing.

First visiting: the display, battery and keyboard were exchanged. The exchanging of the keyboard was incidental because I complained about the leaning of keyboard. We could not spend much time to check the machine because I had to start my work.

Second time: The logic board (twice) and the battery unit were exchanged. After first exchanging of the logic board, the machine was assembled once, but it did not recognize a PC card. Therefore, the board was exchanged to another one. In this time, we checked the machine status after the repairing, and it worked reasonably.

Third time: The power-supply unit and CPU card were exchanged. The machine seems to be OK because there was no problem when we checked the machine status for 30 minutes after the repairing, and I use the machine with power from the battery with no problem at home. If there is still problem, I could not help it because every contents in the machine have been exchanged. The cost totaled about JPY 300,000 according to the bill, meaning if the machine is not under warranty, it would be very hard decision to ask to repair it because I bought it just last January at the price of JPY260,000.

I do not know whether this problem was a sort of the early defectivness because I usually used the machine with the AC adapter since I bought it.
