Reaction of a shop to a problem of the loose screw.

4/9/98: a reader, twotom.

My PB2400 had a sound that seemed to be caused by the loose screws for last two weeks. Then I saw this home page and realized how bad the situation is. So, I took it to a shop in Mito city, which is a half hour away from my house by driving, to ask the repairing. Their diagnosis was the presence of the loose screws and I asked them to tighten the screws. They also told me, "If this repairing does not work, the screws that located lower board might come off. In that case, we could not handle the problem."
About a week later, my PB2400 got the sound again. The screw seemed to have been caught somewhere in the machine. But that was not all. When I was typing, I realized that the top of the function-keys (F1, F2, F11 and F12) have been scraped! How was that happened? I had to say, "The keyboard was taken off the body by a screwdriver."
Although I was a stupid because I did not be attentive the damage at the shop, obviously the damage was made by some metallic tool to take off the keyboard. I took my PB2400 to the shop immediately. Then another staff made an apology, so I asked him to fix the loose screws. Although he worked conscientiously, he said, メI can not take apart the machine any moreメ and stopped the work. Finally, we decided to send the machine to Apple to repair it. But I did not bring a document to prove the warranty. So I asked them to assemble the machine, told them that I would ask to repair the machine the following day with the warranty document, and took the machine to home.
Because I was using the PB2400 as a main machine, I did not want to dispense with it for a long time. Although I thought to take it to an NCR quick-garage (one of the most famous repair service provider in Japan), it was difficult because of the keyboardユs damage (although there was no problem in typing, the shop offered me to exchange it with their expense). Finally, I made up my mind to accept the offer that might take for a month.
I should not have asked the shop to tighten the screws. When I asked the shop to install the memory into my PB2400, the blind top seals (to cover the screw holes located on the upper side of Power-ON key and Esc-key) had been lost, though I did not claim that. Now, they scraped the keyboard! If the keyboard is not under warranty, I would have taken it to an NCR quick-garage.
