A rising CPU temperature and a noise from LCD display

7/3/98: from a reader, Mr. Irie

On June 28th, I went to NCR's quick-garage in Kobe to exchange the LCD unit on my two-month old PB2400; the LCD unit had been getting darker during the last week. When I called the day before to make sure, the staff told me that they had a stock of the LCD part and they would reserve it for me. When I got there, I was the only customer, because it was right after opening time and the exchange procedure was started immediately. The staff guy was skillful. He disassembled the machine confidently and completed the LCD exchange very quickly. Incidentally, I asked him to adjust the position of the heat-pipe because sometimes the CPU temperature reaches 73。C. He also tightened some screws. The whole procedure lasted only about 30 minutes. I was very pleased.

The LCD display returned to its original brightness, so I am very happy, even though the CPU temperature still reaches 71。C. Further, when the backlight is turned on, a noise (like a cicada) comes out from somewhere. If the backlight is turned off, then the noise is also gone. I am thinking of going back to NCR next week.
